Getting Started

We invite you to take part in whatever we have to offer, in whatever way you like, and as often as you like.

It is common at first to feel a little intimidated or confused as you hear new terms or engage in unfamiliar activities. In Buddhism, “beginner’s mind” is celebrated as a quality of experience already close to the heart of the matter.

The most important thing is to be patient and ask plenty of questions.

Joining Us on Monday Night

Our Monday night gathering is the heart of the community. Newcomers are always welcome.

We are a fairly informal community, both in person and online. When attending in person, we remove our shoes at the entrance to the room. Hot tea and snacks are available, along with chairs and meditation cushions.

We usually begin with a few chants, which are projected on a screen. You are welcome to join in or remain silent. We then have a brief meditation followed by a teaching from Tim Olmsted.

Tim may invite newcomers to introduce themselves. Because many members attend online, we ask in-person participants to use a microphone so that everyone can hear.

At the end of the evening, we offer closing chants and spend some time together while putting away the chairs and cushions.

Membership and Donations

You do not need to become a member to attend gatherings or participate in BCSS programs. We welcome people to participate as much or as little as they wish.

If you benefit from the teachings and community, donations of any amount are appreciated and help support our offerings. No one will be turned away because of a lack of funds.
